How to Light a Pilot Light

Pilot lights on gas water heaters (and on furnaces and room heaters) have an unfortunate tendency to go out at the most inconvenient times. Sometimes, it seems, they do it on a whim as if they know how important they are. (The pilot flame should always be on, so it can ignite the main burner on demand.) Fortunately, when the pilot light goes out, relighting it is simple.

Step by Step
1. Turn the control valve OFF, then to the PILOT position.

2. Push and hold down the red button (or in newer models, the control-valve handle itself). This releases gas to the pilot light.

3. Light the pilot with a match.

4. Hold the button or control valve down for 60 seconds to allow the thermocouple to warm up and keep sending gas to the pilot. After 60 seconds, release the button. The pilot light should stay on.

5. Set the control valve to ON.

Note If the pilot still doesn't light or won't stay lit, replace the thermocouple or call your gas company for an inspection.
