Busting concrete is a great way to get primal. Sledgehammer in hand, you can work off the week's frustrations in no time. If the concrete is vast, thick or reinforced with steel, hire somebody else to remove it. Otherwise, you can do it with hand tools and a little savvy.
This trick works well when the concrete is unreinforced and less than 3 inches thick. Go to an edge of the concrete and dig a short distance under it. Then, as the animation shows, have a helper use a pick or mattock to lever up the edge as you swing away with your sledge.
If this technique doesn't work on your slab or the job is more than you bargained for, rent an electric or a pneumatic jackhammer and wear serious ear protection. In the worst case, you may encounter steel reinforcing bars ("rebar"), which must be cut with an acetylene torch NOT a task for weekend John Henrys.
Safety
Stretch before you start, work slowly and rest often. When breaking up concrete, wear safety glasses, a hard hat, gloves, long sleeves, long pants and boots or heavy
shoes. You'll be making the chips fly literally and they're sharp. Also, always know where your helper is and leave plenty of room to swing.
